Angkor Wat Sunrise and Phare Circus in Siem Reap Tour Best 2026 2027 One Day Combo
- You walk into Angkor Wat through the eastern gate at 5:30 am, while the west causeway is still busy with people who set their alarm later than yours.
- The sunrise lands at the library pool, where the five towers sit in the water and your guide knows where to stand you so nobody blocks the shot.
- Two full hours inside the temple come next, taking in the bas relief galleries, the central chambers and the upper terraces most quick tours never touch.
- Ta Prohm follows, with silk cotton trees and strangler figs growing straight through the stone, close to how Henri Mouhot found it in the 1850s.
- Angkor Thom brings the Terrace of the Leper King and the Terrace of the Elephants, then Bayon brings more than 200 carved stone faces, no two alike.
- The Southern Gate causeway closes the morning, 54 gods on one side and 54 demons on the other, and you walk the full length of it.
- A day use hotel room waits at 1:30 pm with a shower, a pool and lunch included, which is the part that makes the evening possible.
- Phare opens its gates at 6:30 pm for street food, drinks and live pre show music, and the Angkor Wat Sunrise and Phare Circus in Siem Reap Tour ends with a seat in the big top when the show starts at 8 pm.
Angkor Wat Sunrise and Phare Circus in Siem Reap Tour | Journey Cambodia
See the sun break over the towers of Angkor Wat before most of the city is awake, sleep off the heat in your own hotel room, then take a front row seat at Phare, The Cambodian Circus the same evening.
Two pickups, one guide and four hours of hotel rest in between, so you get both the temple morning and the 8 pm show without running on empty.
Angkor Wat Sunrise and Phare Circus in Siem Reap Tour squeezed into a single day, with a hotel room and lunch parked in the middle to keep you going.
One booking covers the 4:15 am temple run, a day use room from 1:30 pm to 6:30 pm, your Phare seat in the section you choose, and both transfers.
I have watched this mistake play out hundreds of times, and it always starts the same way.
Somebody books a sunrise tour. It wraps up around one in the afternoon. Then they sit in a cafe all afternoon, wilt slowly, and turn up to an evening show so tired that they remember the air conditioning rather than the performers.
Why does nobody plan for the middle of the day?
Siem Reap heat between 1 pm and 5 pm does not care how tough you think you are. Walking the Old Market at that hour is work. And a one hour circus show with acrobats spinning above your head deserves more than a guest fighting to keep their eyes open.
So we fixed the order of the day. Same temple morning, same evening show, but with a room, a shower, a pool and lunch sitting in the gap between them. The Angkor Wat Sunrise and Phare Circus in Siem Reap Tour is the version of that day I would book for my own family, because it is the Angkor Wat Sunrise and Phare Circus in Siem Reap Tour that gets the timing right.
Temples at dawn. Sleep at noon. Circus under the lights. That is the whole thing.
What You Will Do
Act one: dark to gold
Your driver is at the hotel between 4:15 and 4:35 am, engine running, cold water and cool towels on the seats.
Nobody talks much on the way to the park. Give it twenty minutes and the coffee starts working.
At Angkor Wat you enter from the east side, and your guide leads with a torch past the longest run of bas relief carvings anywhere on earth. At 6 am you stop by the ancient library pool and watch the sun come up behind the towers. Two hours inside the temple follow, and your guide reads the walls for you as you walk.
Act two: the hotel break
The Angkor Wat Sunrise and Phare Circus in Siem Reap Tour works because of this part. The Angkor Wat Sunrise and Phare Circus in Siem Reap Tour day work. You are back at your hotel between 12:30 and 1:30 pm, and the room is ready for you.
Shower first. Then air conditioning, curtains shut, lunch downstairs on us. After that, swim, nap or book a Khmer massage, and nobody hurries you along.
If you nap, set an alarm for 5 pm. Trust me on this one.
Act three: lights up
A second pickup lands at your hotel around 5:15 pm. Freshened up, fed and rested, which makes more difference than you would think.
Phare sits on Sok San Road, and the gates open at 5:30 pm. Cambodian street food, drink specials, live pre show music and the Phare Boutique full of paintings and crafts made by students at the school. Eat dinner here if you like, because the Phare Cafe runs from fish amok all the way to beef kroeung.
The show starts at 8 pm and lasts about an hour. Afterwards the performers come out to say hello and pose for photos, and then your driver takes you back to the hotel, or to Pub Street if you want to carry on.
Itinerary
Angkor Wat Sunrise and Phare Circus in Siem Reap Tour, hour by hour
- 4:15 to 4:35 am. Hotel pickup, Siem Reap. Your driver waits at the lobby with the air conditioning already running. Cold water and a cool towel sit on your seat. Pickups cover the whole central area, from the riverside hotels near the Old Market across to the lanes behind Sivatha Boulevard. Bring a torch or a charged phone, because the first part of the morning is dark.
- 4:50 am. Ticket checkpoint, Angkor Archaeological Park. Your guide shows your one day pass at the gate and the vehicle rolls in before the tour buses stack up. This is the US$37 pass you buy yourself from Angkor Enterprise. Get it online before you fly and you skip the counter queue at dawn.
- 5:30 am. Angkor Wat, eastern gate. In through the east gopura, not the crowded west causeway. Torch on, and your guide walks you along the cloistered galleries and the carvings that fill them. Nobody speaks much in here. The walls do the talking.
- 6:00 am. The library pool, Angkor Wat. You stop beside the two libraries north and south of the main axis, at the edge of the ancient pool. The sun rises behind the five towers and sits flat in the water. This is the photograph everyone asks about later, and your guide knows where to put you so the crowd stays out of frame.
- 6:30 to 8:30 am. Inside Angkor Wat. Two full hours in the temple, covering corridors, central chambers and the upper terraces that rushed groups never reach. Your guide reads the walls as you go, from the Churning of the Ocean of Milk in the east gallery to the army of Suryavarman II marching along the south wall, with the heavens and the hells carved underneath.
- 9:00 am. Breakfast stop outside the park. Sit down at a local restaurant past the temple grounds, or eat the takeaway pack your hotel made for you. Either way, eat something proper. The next stretch is hot and busy.
- 9:30 am. Ta Prohm. The jungle temple, and the one guests remember longest. Silk cotton trees and strangler figs grow straight through the walls, and the place looks close to how the French explorer Henri Mouhot found it in the 1850s. Your guide will point out the doorways used in the Tomb Raider film.
- 10:30 am. Angkor Thom. Into the last great city of the Khmer Empire, past the Terrace of the Leper King and the Terrace of the Elephants, both carved with processions of guards and elephants. Most minibuses go by without stopping. You get out and walk them.
- 11:00 am. Bayon Temple. More than 200 enormous stone faces look down from the towers, and every one of them is different. Historians still argue whether they show King Jayavarman VII himself or the Buddha of compassion. Your guide has a view on it, and you will want to hear the argument.
- 11:30 am. Southern Gate of Angkor Thom. The last stop of the temple morning. A causeway lined with 54 gods on the left and 54 demons on the right, all of them pulling a giant serpent carved in stone. Most visitors take one photo from the bus window. You walk the full causeway.
- 12:30 to 1:30 pm. Back at your hotel, Siem Reap. The room is made up and waiting. Shower, get dressed, eat lunch at the hotel, then swim or sleep until you feel like a person again.
- 1:30 to 5:15 pm. Day use room, Siem Reap. Four hours of air conditioning, a pool and a proper bed. Set an alarm for 5 pm if you nap, because the second pickup will not wait all night.
- 6:30 pm. Second pickup at your hotel. Air conditioned minibus by default, or a tuk tuk if you would rather ride with the breeze in your face. Just tell us when you book.
- 6:45 pm. Phare, The Cambodian Circus, Sok San Road. The gates open two and a half hours before the show. Street food stalls, drink specials, live pre show music, and the Phare Boutique stacked with original art and handicrafts. Dinner here is easy, and the Phare Cafe does a proper sit down meal if you want one.
- 8:00 pm. The big top. One hour of theatre, music, dance and contemporary circus arts, telling Cambodian stories both old and new. The performers are students and graduates of Phare Ponleu Selpak, the arts school in Battambang founded in 1994 by nine young men coming home from a refugee camp. Acts rotate through the season, so the show you catch may be Khmer Metal, Sokha or whatever the current run happens to be.
- 9:00 pm. Phare grounds. The cast comes out after the show for photos and a chat. Stay ten minutes for it. It is the bit most ticket holders miss because they head straight for the car park.
- 9:20 pm. Drop off at your hotel, Pub Street or the Old Market. Tell your driver on the night. Some guests go straight to bed. Others keep the evening going along Pub Street and the night market. Both are fine.
Two things about this timing. Sunrise moves with the season, so your exact pickup time is confirmed the day before you travel. And the run above is the small group version. A private guide can stretch the temple stops, add Banteay Srei, or swap Ta Prohm for Preah Khan if you say so at booking.
On crowds: the eastern gate is why this tour beats a standard sunrise run. You are inside and walking before the west gate queue has moved.
On the middle of the day: the gap between the temples and the circus is about seven hours. Filling it with a room instead of a cafe chair is the single best call you can make on a Siem Reap itinerary.
On the seats at Phare: Section A puts you in the front three rows of the middle section with a water bottle included, Section B sits behind it, and Section C runs down the sides where a few seats have a partly blocked view. If acrobats overhead are the main attraction, pay for A. It is worth the difference.

- Weather. The sunrise run still goes ahead in light rain. If conditions turn unsafe we offer another date or a full refund. Phare performs indoors either way.
- Dress code. Shoulders and knees covered at the temples. Anything comfortable works at the circus, and the venue is open air but covered.
On the temple pass: it is the one cost we are not able to fold in. Angkor Enterprise issues the pass, not tour operators. Buy the one day pass online before you fly.
- The morning pickup runs between 4:15 and 4:35 am from your hotel lobby in Siem Reap.
- We confirm the exact minute by message the day before your tour, because the sunrise time shifts through the year and pickup moves with it. Send us your hotel name and room number when you book, and tell reception to expect us at some ungodly hour.
- Hotels outside the central area can still be served. Message us for the small extra transfer cost before you pay, and we will sort it out. Guests staying out near the airport ask about this fairly often, and it is never a problem.
- The second pickup is around 6:30 pm at the same hotel. Your driver holds a sign with your name, and if the group runs a few minutes late he waits, so there is nothing to worry about.
- The temple leg ends with a drop off at your hotel between 12:30 and 1:30 pm, and that is when your day use room is ready.
- The evening leg ends around 9:20 pm. By default your driver takes you back to the hotel, and he is happy to drop you at Pub Street or the Old Market instead if you want to keep the night going. Tell him on the way there rather than on the way back.
- Nothing is booked for the following morning, so sleep in. You have earned it.
Pack light, because you are on your feet for hours before the Angkor Wat Sunrise and Phare Circus in Siem Reap Tour gives you a bed.
- A torch or a charged phone. The corridors at Angkor Wat are dark at 5:30 am.
- Shoulders and knees covered. Temple rules, no exceptions, and staff do check.
- Comfortable walking shoes. Sandals are fine, heels are not.
- A camera with spare batteries. You will take more photos than you plan to.

- Fitness level. The sunrise morning involves several hours of walking, some of it on stone steps and dirt paths. Nothing extreme, but wear shoes you trust.
- Weather. Angkor runs in light rain and looks good in it. Heavy storms can delay the sunrise, and if conditions turn unsafe we offer another date or a full refund.
- Heat. Drink more water than you think you need, and use the hotel break properly rather than treating it as dead time.
- Photography. Your guide knows the light and the quiet corners. Ask him for the spots that are not on the standard route.
- Phare seating. Section A seats get assigned on the morning of the show rather than at booking, so families and friends sit together without a fuss. Choose A if you want faces and aerial work up close.
- The cause behind the show. Phare is the social business of Phare Ponleu Selpak, the Battambang arts school founded in 1994 by nine young men returning from a refugee camp. Your ticket pays its graduates a proper wage and funds the school.
- Money. Carry small US dollar bills for breakfast, drinks and tips. Cambodian riel works too and is common for small amounts.
- Phone signal. Coverage at the temples is patchy but usable. Download an offline map before you leave the hotel, just in case.
- Group size note. The small group rate refers to the number of travellers in your own booking, not the size of the group on the day.
- Booking amendments. Any amendment to your date needs at least 24 hours notice, and refunds are paid back within 7 business days.
The last word
Most people book these two things on separate days, and a fair number of them tell me later that they wished they had done it this way instead.
The reasons are easy enough. You see the best temple in the world at sunrise and the best live show in Siem Reap at eight, you see both on the same day, and you lose nothing in the middle because a hotel room does the work of a rest day. Same team, same booking, two pickups, four hours of sleep when the heat peaks. Book the Angkor Wat Sunrise and Phare Circus in Siem Reap Tour small group departure from US$37 per person, go private if you want your own pace, and finish the night with acrobats overhead and a drum still going in your chest.
Cancellations made at least 24 hours ahead get a full refund. Inside 24 hours, or a no show, there is no refund. Any date move needs 24 hours notice.
